Feliz Dia del Papa!

Spanish Academy students made these shirts and ties cards for their dads!  They had a blast coloring in the ties and placing them on the shirts!

Feliz Dia del Papa!

Students Clean Up North Bend! Students Clean Up North Bend!

Padres, you’ll be very pleased to know that your little ones made a BIG difference in our community today!

About one month ago I contacted North Bend Mayor, Ken Hearing to see how our little hands could help make our community cleaner.  With the help of the local parks department of North Bend we did it!  Here’s how our event went:

Mark Pray, North Bend Parks Lead talked to the students about the importance of keeping the streets clean and safe for all of us.  Our students were made to feel as ‘good citizens’ for helping to pick up the trash along the Tanner Trail.  Mark spoke for only a few minutes and quickly SA cleaners were putting on medical gloves for hand protection.  Armed with plastic grocery bags they began scouring the trail and the nearby train tracks (I confirmed that no trains would be passing during our clean up!)  We found so much trash!  Students were eagerly filling their bags to the rim with dirty trash!  You would have thought it to be Halloween the way they scrambled to fill the bags!

Our volunteers today included Callie and Carmen’s mom, Blythe Young in the morning and Carlos Grant’s mom, Dawn Finney for the afternoon cleanup!  Along with our teachers, they helped the little ones scour the trail for trash ensuring that items picked up were not dangerous to their little fingers.  This event was made so successful because of the help of our volunteer parents today!  Again, muchas gracias to Blythe and Dawn!

I’m sure today’s events will be lasting for our students.  This week we will continue talking to students about keeping the outdoors clean and tidy.  Students will also get the opportunity to walk around SA campus to pick up bits and pieces of paper.  Overall, it was very successful!  Please talk to your little ones about their experience today and why they were called ‘good citizens’ by Mark Pray.  Also, remind them to apply today’s lesson to their bedroom and back yard!

We will definitely continue this event, likely having a community clean up day in September and June each year!

Spring Concert for the Elderly! Spring Concert for the Elderly!

Today you will hear the Spanish Academy students joyously sing and dance in celebration of 5 de Mayo, a traditional Mexican holiday.  And some of our older students will do a fun skit! Joining me here is Maestra Jennifer, our lead teacher who teaches in the K-1 classroom and Maestra Jaisve who teaches in our preschool.

Before we begin I want to tell you a little bit about our school.  We are located here in North Bend, up on the Harmon Heights road.  Our campus is on 3 pristine acres and we have a miniature farm which all the kids really enjoy.  We have a miniature horse, sheep, chickens, bunnies, a pygmy goat and exotic Brazilian ducks!  You feel like you are part of “The Sound of Music.”

I started the school over 5 years ago to offer my own daughter a unique education where she could learn in Spanish and enjoy the great outdoors.  We now have about 30 students in our school.

Leading our students in today’s concert is Maestra Jennifer.

We will begin with the pledging allegiance to our country, followed by a short reading about the significance of 5 de Mayo.  Our students will read in both Spanish and English.

Spanish Academy students have worked hard over the past few weeks to bring you a selection of 4 lively songs and one dance!

Buenos Dias

A Todo el Mundo

Saco una Monito

Los Pollitos

La Cucaracha

La Raspa (Mexican Hat Dance)

The words to these songs can be found on the last page of your program.

Following today’s performance Spanish Academy students will be giving you flowers they made at school and cookies.

Student Description of 5 de Mayo

Aiyana:  Cinco de Mayo means “the fifth of May.”  Muchos creen que el cinco de mayo es el día de independecia de Mexico, pero no es correcto.  Many people believe it is Mexico’s Independence Day, but that is incorrect.

Katalina:  El cinco de mayo es el aniversario de una batalla que ocurrió entre Los Mexicanos y Los Franceses en 1862(mil ocho cientos sesenta y dos).  Cinco de Mayo is the anniversary of a battle that took place between the Mexicans and the French in 1862.

Cinco de Mayo is the celebration of the courage of the Mexican people during the battle on May 5th, 1862 where 4,500 Mexican soldiers defeated some Mexican traitors and the French army of 6,500 at Puebla, Mexico.  The "Batalla de Puebla" became a symbol of Mexican unity and patriotism.

Todos: !Feliz cinco de mayo!

Buenos Dias

Buenos dias

Buenos dias

Como estas

Como estas

Muy Bien Gracias

Muy Bien Gracias

Y Usted

Y Usted

Buenas tardes

Buenas tardes

Como estas

Como estas?

Muy Bien Gracias

Muy Bien Gracias

Y Usted

Y Usted

Buenas noches

Buenos noches

Como estas

Como estas

Muy Bien Gracias

Muy Bien Gracias

Y Usted

Y Usted

 A Todo el Mundo

A todo el mundo extiendo la mano,

Extiendo la mano, extiendo la mano;

A todo el mundo extiendo la mano,

Doy la mano asi.

Todos juntos

Podemos crear la paz.

Aunque no nos conocemos,

Entendernos sí podemos;

Es facil con las manos unidas.

Saco Una Manito

Saco una manito,

La hago bailar,

La cierro, la abro,

La vuelvo a guardar.

Saco otra manito,

La hago bailar,

La cierro, la abro,

La vuelvo a guardar.

Saco dos manitos,

Las hago bailar,

Las cierro, las abro,

Las vuelvo a guardar.

 Los Pollitos

Los pollitos dicen:

“pío, pío, pío”

Cuando tienen hambre,

Cuando tienen frio.

La gallina busca el maíz

y el trigo,

Les da la comida

Y les presta abrigo.

Bajo sus dos alas,

Acurru caditos,

Duermen los pollitos,

Hasta el otro día.

La Cucaracha

La cucaracha, la cucaracha,

Ya no puede caminar,

Porque no puede,

Porque le faltan,

Patas para caminar.
