SA is cleaning up North Bend! SA is cleaning up North Bend!

Padres, you’ll be very pleased to know that your little ones made a BIG difference in our community today!

About one month ago I contacted North Bend Mayor, Ken Hearing to see how our little hands could help make our community cleaner.  With the help of the local parks department of North Bend we did it!  Here’s how our event went:

Mark Pray, North Bend Parks Lead talked to the students about the importance of keeping the streets clean and safe for all of us.  Our students were made to feel as ‘good citizens’ for helping to pick up the trash along the Tanner Trail.  Mark spoke for only a few minutes and quickly SA cleaners were putting on medical gloves for hand protection.

Carmen's bag is loaded!
Armed with plastic grocery bags they began scouring the trail and the nearby train tracks (I confirmed that no trains would be passing during our clean up!)  We found so much trash!  Students were eagerly filling their bags to the rim with dirty trash!  You would have thought it to be Halloween the way they scrambled to fill the bags!   Our volunteers today included Callie and Carmen’s mom, Blythe Young in the morning and Carlos Grant’s mom, Dawn Finney for the afternoon cleanup!  Along with our teachers, they helped the little ones scour the trail for trash ensuring that items picked up were not dangerous to their little fingers.  This event was made so successful because of the help of our volunteer parents today!  Again, muchas gracias to Blythe and Dawn!

SA students enthused in clean-up effort! SA students enthused in clean-up effort!

I’m sure today’s events will be lasting for our students.  This week we will continue talking to students about keeping the outdoors clean and tidy.  Students will also get the opportunity to walk around SA campus to pick up bits and pieces of paper.  Overall, it was very successful!  Please talk to your little ones about their experience today and why they were called ‘good citizens’ by Mark Pray.  Also, remind them to apply today’s lesson to their bedroom and back yard!  We will definitely continue this event, likely having a community clean up day in September and June each year!
